B) DOGS. More complicated than cats!

Importation is however very possible, very common and not really particularly difficult  - though a bit of a hassle!

Under Saudi regulations, importation of dogs is permitted if it can be categorized as either “Guard dog” ,“ Hunting dog” or guide dog for the blind.

While your poodle may not seem to come from under any of the above, the poodle is in it's original  standard form a hunting dog- and as it barks is serving to guard your house. Whatever the breed of dog -excluding those listed below - it will be allowed entry  providing it has the following papers:

  1. A current rabies and health certificate

  2. A statement from your vet that the dog is being kept for the purpose of guarding your home

  3. The above stamped by the Saudi Consulate in your country of residence

IT IS ADVISABLE that 1: and  2: are on one sheet of paper

Will my animal adapt to Saudi, will it take the heat?

Absolutely no problem. All animals adapt very well and very quickly  ( We have huskies and St Bernards here!). It does get a bit hot here in the summer, but sensible animals do the same as we do - stay inside with the air conditioners as much as possible

Restricted Breeds (and cross breeds of the same)

Show Dogs (eg:Yorkshire Terriers) Though not listed, may be problematic

If your dog is listed, don't even try to import it. Even if you get the "Correct Paperwork" together, the animal is liable to be confiscated at customs

Throughout the kingdom there are a large number of outlets selling animals. On sale is everything from dogs and cats to every exotic imaginable- chimps, lions, tigers, bears to name about a very few! (All in blatant CITES contravention). Without exception animals are kept in deplorable conditions. Many attempts have been made to kerb this trade- With no success.
Expats frequently buy cats and dogs (for obscene prices) from such outlets simply to rescue the animals from their living hell. Unfortunately this serves only to further fuel the trade.
